The use of AI has been common in different fields nowadays and now OpenAI is supposed to face a copyright lawsuit from three popular music labels in Bollywood, including T-Series, Saregama, and Sony Music.
The labels have claimed in their lawsuit that OpenAI has used their sounds to train AI models. The case was filed at the Delhi High Court on February 13, 2025, and the companies said in the legal documents that OpenAI has to follow the rules in India if they are willing to exist here.

The IMI group, representing Sony Music and Warner Music has addressed their concerns that AI can easily access lyrics, compositions, and recordings through online platforms, leading to the violation of copyright laws.
Two legal experts appointed by the court last month said that the Delhi High Court is eligible to hear a copyright lawsuit filed against AI. They mentioned the reasons for the same, saying that it is because the jurisdiction is decided by the plaintiff’s place of business under the Indian Copyright Act.

This is another major lawsuit filed against OpenAI. Notably, a similar case has been filed by the news agency ANI in 2024, alleging that OpenAI was using their content to train AI models and this was followed by multiple lawsuits against OpenAI by certain publishers and media groups.
The current situation has hinted that OpenAI might see its end in India. It has become easy for anyone nowadays to use such platforms to generate any kind of content and this eventually does not encourage originality. The result of the lawsuit by the three record labels remains to be seen in the upcoming days.
