The Christmas season may not hold major cultural significance in the Telugu states, but films released during this holiday window often enjoy strong box office runs. This trend was clearly seen earlier with Pushpa and Salaar performing well during the festive period.
Surprisingly, Telugu cinema has failed to capitalise on this Christmas season. None of the major films were lined up for release during the holiday stretch, leaving theatres without a strong Telugu attraction at a time when footfalls usually rise.
The only notable Telugu release in December was Nandamuri Balakrishna’s Akhanda 2. The film released earlier in the month and managed a long run, despite mixed word of mouth across several centres.
However, Akhanda 2 did not gain full momentum at the box office. The buzz slowed down well before Christmas, preventing the film from benefiting fully from the holiday audience surge during the festive week.
Several big films are scheduled for the upcoming Sankranti season, featuring Prabhas, Chiranjeevi, Ravi Teja, Naveen Polishetty and others. Any one of these films could have advanced its release to make use of the Christmas window.
As a result, Telugu audiences were left without suitable theatrical options during Christmas and New Year. A similar situation had occurred earlier during Vinayaka Chauthi, and the repetition once again highlights a missed opportunity for Telugu cinema.
