After a super-successful 2022, the Kannada industry was again going through a very dull phase in 2023. All the biggies, including Darshan’s Kranti and Upendra’s Kabzaa, were declared disasters. But finally, Sandalwood has once again delivered a film that it would be proud of.
Director Nithin Krishnamurthy and cinematographer Arvind Kashyap’s Hostel Huduguru Bekagiddare is the film to beat this year in the Kannada industry. The film’s crazy plot, raw energy, chaotic drama, and hilarious dialogues are making the audience, especially the youth, flock to the theaters.
“Hostel Hudugaru Bekagiddare” revolves around a single night’s incident in a boys hostel, where the hostel warden commits suicide and blames a group of boys in his suicide letter. What happens next is a mad, mad, fun ride.
Nithin directed the film in cinéma vérité style, using spontaneous dialogues and observational camera work to create a fly-on-the-wall effect. The performances are completely natural, and people will recognize them by the names of the characters they played in the film.
The second half of the film drags a bit as things get repetitive and people want the film to come to a conclusion soon. The climax, however, is again impressive and clap-worthy.
The film is sure to gain more prominence and even achieve cult status once it makes its debut on OTT and other language audience will get to experience what Nithin has created.
It will be interesting to see if the film will be dubbed in Telugu like Kantara or remade like Kiraak Party. It will be almost impossible to match the original in either way because the flavor of Hostel Huduguru Bekagiddare is so unique and fresh that it can’t be replicated.
