A Virat Kohli biopic is every cricket fan’s dream. His fire on the field, discipline off it, and determination have inspired millions. But can his life be captured on screen without losing its essence? Recently, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap shared his thoughts.
Anurag Kashyap on Virat Kohli Biopic
While promoting his film Nishaanchi, Kashyap admitted he was unsure about making a Kohli biopic. He explained that Kohli is already a hero to many, and a biopic needs complexity, struggle, and emotional depth beyond admiration.
“I don’t know if I would want to because he’s already a hero to many children. If I do a biopic, I would choose a difficult subject, a person’s life,” Kashyap told Filmygyan.
Kashyap’s Respect for Kohli
Kashyap praised Kohli, calling him authentic, emotional, and an incredible person. He also acknowledged knowing him personally. His hesitation, however, stems from whether Kohli’s story has the complexity needed for cinema.
Kohli’s Story Beyond Cricket
Kohli’s life is filled with emotional and inspiring moments. At 18, he lost his father while playing a Ranji Trophy match but chose to keep batting. Later, he told Graham Bensinger, “I promised my brother I will play for India. Cricket became the first priority.”
Off the field, Kohli and his wife Anushka Sharma co-founded SeVVA, a non-profit supporting sports scholarships and animal welfare. His foundation has also helped senior citizens and donated over ₹3.5 crore during COVID relief efforts.
A Story Made for Cinema
Kohli once joked to footballer Sunil Chhetri that he would cast himself in his own biopic. His journey has tragedy, determination, and triumph, all the elements of a cinematic story. Yet, Kashyap believes turning it into film requires more than admiration.
Focus on Nishaanchi
For now, Kashyap is concentrating on Nishaanchi, an intense drama set in early-2000s Uttar Pradesh. It stars Aaishvary Thackeray in his acting debut, playing twin brothers with opposing ideologies. The film, inspired by Gangs of Wasseypur, explores crime, choices, and consequences.
The Bigger Question
Kashyap’s hesitation raises an important question: can the life of a living, admired hero be portrayed authentically on screen? Fans will continue to hope for a Virat Kohli biopic, but for now, it remains a dream waiting for the right filmmaker.
