A United Airlines passenger was arrested in Houston after trying to open an aircraft door just after landing, triggering the emergency slide. The incident took place on October 5, 2025, on flight 788 from Indianapolis to George Bush Intercontinental Airport.
Passenger Triggers Emergency Slide
Officials said the aircraft had already landed and was taxiing to the gate when 20-year-old Arturo Martinez tried to open one of the cabin doors. The sudden action deployed the emergency evacuation slide, creating panic among passengers. No injuries were reported.
Quick Response from Authorities
Airport teams and Houston Police responded immediately. Martinez was detained after a medical evaluation and taken into custody. Meanwhile, passengers were safely transported to the terminal by bus as fire crews inspected the aircraft for safety concerns.
United Airlines Statement
United Airlines confirmed that the Boeing 737-800 had landed safely before the disruption. The airline described the passenger’s actions as “disruptive” and said the plane was sent for a full technical inspection before resuming operations later that day.
How Emergency Slides Deploy
Aviation experts explained that aircraft doors cannot open mid-flight due to cabin pressure. However, once a plane lands, internal and external pressure equalises. If a door is armed at that point, pulling the handle automatically deploys the emergency slide.
Legal Action and Broader Concerns
Martinez has been charged with criminal mischief and remains in custody awaiting a court hearing. While such incidents are rare, they cause costly delays and raise ongoing concerns about unruly passenger behaviour worldwide.
