On Monday, the West Indian community was having a joyous time celebrating their culture with pride in an annual event. Various families took part in the West Indian Day parade and mingled with their ilk. However, the cultural event became the victim of another tragic incident of gun violence.

It must’ve been traumatizing for various families that were part of the event. Many women and children were present there who fortunately got out unharmed. And this is not an incident in isolation as there has been a history of violence during this parade. People said they trusted the security in the place as things have been peaceful in recent times but it turns out it wasn’t sufficient.

Such cultural events are important for marginal communities as they meet with their kind without any fear of racism or hate. It is also a gateway for the young generation to know more about their roots and culture. But it turns out they can’t even manage that. According to police, this shooting was “not random” but “intentional” from the shooter. While there is no evidence of a planned mass shooting, this can be an incident of hate crime.
