No More Free Luggage? Railways Warn Passengers

Indian Railways excess luggage charges rule

Indian Railways has announced a new rule regarding luggage carried by passengers on trains. Travellers will now have to pay extra charges if their luggage exceeds the permitted free limit.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed this rule in Parliament. He explained that the decision aims to reduce overcrowding inside train coaches and improve overall passenger safety.

Under the revised rule, each passenger can carry a fixed quantity of luggage free of cost. AC First Class passengers are allowed up to 70 kg, while AC 2 Tier passengers can carry 50 kg without extra charges.

Passengers travelling in AC 3 Tier, Chair Car, and Sleeper Class are allowed 40 kg of luggage. Second Class passengers can carry up to 35 kg for free.

If the luggage exceeds the permitted limit, passengers will have to pay additional charges. Oversized items such as large boxes are not allowed inside coaches and must be booked separately.

Railway authorities have also clarified that business goods cannot be carried as personal luggage. Railway staff may inspect luggage at stations and onboard trains.

Passengers violating these rules may face penalties or fines. The new regulation is expected to make train journeys more comfortable and safer for everyone.
