An Indian-origin influencer based in the US recently stirred massive outrage online after posting pictures in a completely see-through saree with nothing but a bikini underneath. While she claimed it was about embracing her roots, the internet didn’t quite agree.
The viral photos, captioned with hashtags like #DesiQueen and #SatiSavitriEnergy, didn’t sit well with many Indians. Comment sections were flooded with angry reactions, accusing her of mocking Indian culture for internet points.
Wearing a saree like lingerie isn’t empowerment, wrote one user. Another pointed out, This isn’t bold, it’s bait. If this is ‘feminism,’ then it’s built on disrespect and shock value.
Critics say this is just the latest episode in a disturbing trend where some influencers trash India on global platforms, pose in hypersexualized versions of traditional attire, and beg for Western validation, all in the name of liberation.
What’s worse, one comment read, is that these clout chasers pretend to be victims when called out. This isn’t feminism it’s freeloading on shame and double standards.
While supporters defended her choice as freedom of expression, many felt that using the term Sati Savitri while doing the exact opposite was deliberate provocation and cultural mockery.
As debates rage on, one thing’s clear: people are tired of influencers using Indian culture as an aesthetic while discarding its values.
Whether it’s a PR stunt or just tone-deaf clout-chasing, the backlash shows that not everyone is buying the woke performance.
