The fourth round of negotiations took place in early November 2025 during Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal’s visit to New Zealand. Talks held in Auckland and Rotorua showed strong optimism, with both sides confident that the deal will be finalised soon.

Protecting Key Sectors While Expanding Trade

Officials from both nations agreed to protect sensitive sectors while encouraging trade in goods and services. Bilateral trade touched USD 1.3 billion in 2024–25, showing steady growth and potential for major expansion once the FTA is signed.

Aviation Cooperation Gains Momentum

Aviation is emerging as the most promising area of collaboration. Air India and Air New Zealand are planning to launch direct flights by 2028, which will cut travel time, expand tourism, and enhance business links between the two countries.

Strong Optimism for Partnership

During his visit, Piyush Goyal met Air New Zealand CEO Nikhil Ravishankar to discuss partnerships in India’s growing aviation sector. The meeting reflected shared optimism and a mutual goal to strengthen economic and travel connections.

Defining Milestone Ahead

If progress continues smoothly, the FTA will mark a historic milestone in India–New Zealand relations, deepening trade, travel, and cooperation for the next generation of both nations.
