The Kollywood film Blast, starring Arjun and Preity Mukhundhan in the lead roles and directed by Subash K Raj, was released in theatres on May 28. The action thriller received positive reviews from both audiences and critics during its theatrical run.
Despite not featuring major star actors, the film managed to perform well at the box office through strong word-of-mouth publicity. According to reports, Blast collected more than Rs. 70 crore worldwide and emerged as a highly profitable venture for its producers.
Following its successful theatrical run, Blast began streaming on Netflix today in five languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi. Viewers who missed the film in theatres are now watching it on OTT and sharing their opinions online.
Many expected Blast to become a major success on OTT because of its strong theatrical performance and action-packed content. However, the initial response from streaming audiences appears to be more divided than expected.
Some viewers feel that the film relies heavily on action sequences and mass moments. They argue that the story, emotional depth and logical progression are not strong enough to hold attention outside the theatrical environment.
According to these viewers, the large-screen experience helped enhance the impact of the action scenes. As a result, they believe the same content does not create an equally engaging experience when watched on a digital platform.
Another section of the audience has described Blast as an average film with a few well-executed action sequences. They feel that the screenplay and narrative are fairly routine and have labelled the film as somewhat overrated compared to the hype it received.
At the same time, some social media users have started comparing Blast with Maa Inti Bangaaram, which recently featured Samantha in a women-led action role. These comparisons have generated fresh discussions among movie enthusiasts.
Supporters of Maa Inti Bangaaram argue that its action scenes feel more realistic and emotionally engaging. While they acknowledge that the film has certain flaws, they believe it delivers a stronger overall experience than Blast.
Despite the mixed reactions, Blast continues to attract attention on OTT due to its successful theatrical performance. The coming days will provide a clearer picture of its viewership numbers and long-term popularity on Netflix.
